Huskies' Glenn playing through pain

— Faced with an all-too-familiar storyline to his latest University of Washington training camp, junior defensive back Justin Glenn carried a fairly succinct credo into his first practice on Monday afternoon.

Not this year.

The former Kamiak High School star had seen far too many seasons move on without him as he worked his way back from injury, and so Glenn wasn't going to let a little foot sprain keep him out of action.

"I was at the point where, if I could (practice), I'm going to (practice)," Glenn said after Monday's training camp session, while subtly keeping weight off his left foot. "This is where the opportunity to play in the season is, and I'm at the point where I need to get out there and not let injuries hold me back like they kind of have.

"I can play through the pain. It's not anything that's going to hold me back."

Problems with a broken ankle, a concussion and assorted pulls and strains have kept Glenn out of the mix for far too many practices during his first three years at UW. All the while, younger teammates have taken advantage of their opportunities in his absence — both at cornerback and safety.

The latter position, which seems to be where Glenn has settled in for now, currently has four players younger than him battling for two starting spots. Third-year junior Nate Fellner, who took Glenn's starting job midway through the 2009 season, is slated to start at free safety, while sophomores Sean Parker, Taz Stevenson and Will Shamburger are battling for the strong safety role.

And then there's Glenn, who is working behind Fellner but has no guarantees in terms of playing time. The foot injury hasn't exactly helped matters.

"It was frustrating because my other foot, the (right) one that I had been rehabbing for a year-and-a-half, is finally 100 percent," he said. "I was training, I was working hard and getting faster, and to have this was kind of a little setback. But it's nothing too serious."

In the spring, Glenn seemed to settle into a hybrid cornerback/safety position in the Huskies' nickel package — a role he said suited his skills perfectly. But with another class of fresh legs entering fall camp, along with sophomore cornerback Greg Ducre, junior corner Anthony Gobern and the glut of experienced safeties, Glenn knew he was going to have to hold down the position throughout fall camp.

And he wouldn't have been able to do that from the sidelines.

STPNS - Kamiak donates to African schools, hospitals, Mukilteo ...

MUKILTEO, Washington (STPNS) -- Traveling from village to village in Ghana, West Africa to hand-deliver school and medical supplies donated by Kamiak High School students to needy Ghanaian children takes days and days.

But after seeing the grateful faces of all of the nurses, teachers and children in Ghana, Kamiak junior Joel Bervell would go back and do it again – tomorrow.

Joel went on a charitable trip to Ghana, West Africa from July 17 to Aug. 4 to donate about $11,000 in supplies to Ghanaian schools and hospitals. He was delivering the donations made to the non-profit Hugs for Ghana.

Hugs for Ghana is a student-led organization dedicated to helping needy children in hospitals, schools and orphanages and other child-related services in Ghana.

After a family trip to Ghana, Joel and his sister Rachel Brevell, then a student at Kamiak, were inspired to help support underprivileged children in Ghana. Both of their parents are from Ghana.

They were troubled by the sorry state of the hospitals and the number of schoolchildren without basic supplies like books and pencils.

So, in 2007, Rachel Brevell founded Hugs for Ghana and started fundraising at Kamiak. Rachel has since graduated from Kamiak; when she left, Joel became president of the organization.

“My grand vision when I was in high school was that students at Kamiak would get together to lend a hand to something bigger than themselves,” Rachel said.

Hugs for Ghana held two fundraisers at Kamiak this year to buy thermometers for hospitals with shortages in Ghana.

“Each of these hospitals lacked many of the necessary medical supplies that are needed to provide the best care possible to children,” Joel said. “Stuff just wasn’t up to par.”

The first was a coin drive, where students donated their pennies, nickels and dimes to the hospitals. In a week, they raised about $500.

“Students were encouraged to donate coins rather than dollar bills,” Joel said. “The goal of this drive was not only to raise money, but also to help students realize that there is a world in need beyond their view.

“Students at Kamiak realized that when we work together, it only takes a little to eventually make a difference.”

Hugs for Ghana also held A Ghanaian Night of Culture, its most recent fundraiser, which introduced the Ghanaian culture to the Mukilteo community through song and dance.
