Celebrating 100 years of female flight by taking to the air
One hundred years ago, Harriet Quimby became the first American woman to earn her pilot certificate. Since then, women have caught up or surpassed men in many fields — but not the airfield.
Today, fewer than 6 percent of American pilots are female, said Jennifer Storm, spokeswoman for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. A pilot herself, she says the barriers for women entering aviation are more imagined than real.
One Winchester pilot believed those barriers existed until she gave flying a try in 1990.
“It was always something I was interested in, but I never thought girls could fly,” said Dierdre O’Connor, a pilot and member of the Aero Club of New England board of directors.
O’Connor was 40 and looking for new experiences when she decided to take up flying lessons at the East Coast Aero Club Flight School at Hanscom Field in Bedford.
She was inspired by her uncle, a pilot on the U.S.S. Wasp who was lost at sea off Iwo Jima during World War II.
After O’Connor performed her first solo flight, her instructor ripped off the tail that indicated she was a student from O’Connor’s shirt and labeled it with the date. Until then, O’Connor had kept her flying lessons a secret from her family. She broke her silence by throwing the tail at her mother and sister.
“Just be the best pilot you can,” her mother said.
During the past two decades, O’Connor has tallied 925 hours of flight time and earned her single-engine, multi-engine, helicopter and commercial plane certificates. She will be eligible for her airline transport pilot license at 1,500 hours, she said.
“It’s such a fulfilling thing,” she said. “It became a challenge.”
Careers in aviation
For O’Connor, flying is a passion — but it has never been a job. While she once worked in air traffic reporting and sometimes helps out at East Coast Aero Club as a dispatcher, her main work is at the law offices of Murray and Quill in Winchester. Someday, she said, she would like to be a flight instructor.
Careers in aviation span more than just commercial airline pilots or the military. Storm said pilots are needed in search and rescue operations, agriculture operations such as crop dusting, business travel and aviation maintenance.
Because pilots are required to retire from flying at age 65, Storm said, there will be a dearth of pilots in the coming years. While 33 is the average age of pilots, many are baby boomers who will soon be retiring.

The age 65 rule goes into effect in December 2012, but the airlines must begin training well in advance of that, and some have. JetBlue has done some hiring for expansion, as has Southwest. But next year, Continental/United will have to begin planning

Along with that, his defined pension plan was terminated and the $100000 per year he'd expected as retirement income at age 60 has dropped to $28000 per year beginning at age 65. A United pilot told a similar story, saying his pay had been cut in half

I went and did my intro flight with ATP in Nashville about 2 weeks ago. I am still debating the decision to go through with the deal, that is if I can get a decent student loan. As far as the job out-look in the near future, if I decided to wait a few months before starting the 150day fasttrack, do you think the current "talk" of hiring will continue? I haven't really heard many people in the industry "brag" about the need for more pilots. I have looked at some resources and seen that there are still several companies with furlough pilots, but not sure what the norm would be. Also If I were to strat in the next month, finish in 5 months, CFI for ATP for 5-6 months, What would you assume that I might make Min and Max my 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th years at regionals based on your own knowledge and how hard do you think it would be getting hired once I reached my 500 TT hrs? I think we are near the beginning of a lot of pilot hiring. But, the industry is very cyclical and there typically isn't a lot of advance warning before hiring waves start or end. The main reason I think hiring will be good in the near future is that we are on the cusp of a lot of airline retirements. Pilots used to have to retire at age 60, but 4.5 years ago that rule was changed to age 65. So, there have been no age related retirements for nearly 5 years. Also, the economy wasn't growing fast the last few years, and that impacts staffing at airlines.Airline Pilot Age 65 Update - Bookshelf
