Don't miss the small stuff
Yet in cleaning out drawers and closet shelves during our upstairs & back to downstairs moves during this Great 2011 Flood, we ran across two shoeboxes full of eight-track tapes. If you as a reader don’t remember eight-tracks, then you’re probably reading this on-line, right? We don’t still have a workable eight-track player, but as I read the titles, I could sing along with many of those classics. One was Mac Davis performing, “Stop and Smell the Roses.” So I was humming that early the other morning as I stepped out onto the balcony at Brownspur with a cup of coffee – humming softly, since Betsy was still asleep. The birds were waking up, though, and our resident oriole flew to the top of the pecan tree behind the Store (our guesthouse) to sing his song to the world willing to listen (see the lyrics above). Finished, he flew across to the Mammy Grudge ditchbank, the rising sun flashing gold-orange on his plumage. Then three more male orioles followed him! I took another sip and set my hot cup on the railing, rocked back in the chair and placed my hands in my lap. Almost as if he’d been waiting for that, a small brown & white butterfly fluttered through the posts and lit on the back of my right hand. He began to explore, running his tongue (I reckon) out to taste the way before him as he tiptoed along. He turned away from the hair on the side of my hand and on my wrist, advancing around my knuckles to the thumb, which he then climbed. My right thumb was on my left hand, so when he reached that hand, he marched right on across the back of it, tasting all the way. Suddenly, I realized that I could actually feel him walking now, although I had not while he was on my right. See, that hand was crushed in a cotton gin lint cleaner almost forty years ago. I’ve never had a lot of sensation in that hand, but let’s look at the positive side here: I can feel a butterfly walking across my left hand! Maybe I’d just never held still enough to let one walk across me before. Only a few minutes later, I interrupted my bride’s observation by warning her, “You’ve got a spider descending upon you, right over your face.” She froze and glanced upward to see a green spider about the size of a little fingernail, rappelling down its own web string. She sat perfectly still as it flowed inches from her, studying each other apparently. The spider’s legs had knee and ankle joints which operated independently of the other sets of legs. I’d never noticed one like that before, nor had she. It drifted on over into the pecan tree and she went to get us more coffee. Oh, yeah, Betsy kills her own snakes, so spiders are small stuff. Once again it’s time to do a quarterly clearing of my little notebook. This small journal resides in my fat purse, always ready to accept information I figure might evolve into 700-word Snippets columns. Sometimes, however, the ideas don’t do a thing but lie there on the page, inky and smeared, and I must eventually dispose of them.Mac Davis Lyrics - News
When Mac Davis penned the above lyrics for his 1970s classic pop song, "I Believe In Music," he was expressing in song what just about every musician of the time was feeling when they sang or played an instrument. It certainly was true for me,
One was Mac Davis performing, “Stop and Smell the Roses.” Seems like the chorus went something like, “you've got to stop and smell the roses, you've got to count your many blessings along the way; you're gonna find the way to heaven is a rough and

He was like, "Yeah, you take a couple of chords you like and you play them and go, 'dadadadada' over it and pretty soon that turns into lyrics. You then write that down in a notebook with the chords and that's how you write songs." I was like, "What?

Mac Davis - Whoever Finds This I Love You Lyrics
On a quiet street in the city
A little old man walks along
Shuffling through the autumn afternoon
And the autumn leaves reminded him
Another summer's come and gone
He had a long lonely night ahead waiting for june
Then among the leaves near an orphan's home
A piece of paper caught his eye
And he stooped to pick it up with trembling hands
And as he read the childish writing the old man began to cry
'cause the words burned inside him like a flame
Whoever finds this i love you
Whoever finds this i need you
I ain't even got no one to talk to
So whoever finds this i love you
