Freeport-McMoRan Foundation announces 2011 grant recipients
The Graham County Community Investment Fund was established in 2009 to focus on programs and projects that create a sustainable community benefit. It is administered by a committee comprised of community leaders selected by the Graham County Community Partnership Panel. This panel was established by Freeport-McMoRan seven years ago to foster open and ongoing dialogue with the community, allowing the company and the community to work together to develop thoughtful solutions that address community issues. This proposal presents an exciting opportunity for the community to engage in a sustainable project to support higher education. The original project sought to support scholarships over four semesters for Graham County high school students taking dual enrollment courses at Eastern Arizona College. The amended project will match funds raised, up to $25,000, to create an endowment that will sustain those dual enrollment scholarships in perpetuity. Funds will be used to establish a community farm providing local, organic produce for consumers of the Our Neighbor’s Pantry food bank as well community members who wish to participate in the project. The model for sustainability is based on community supported agriculture (CSA). The project aims to increase access to fresh produce, empower those in need to prepare and consume more fresh produce and increase awareness of, and provide education about, organic farming and gardening techniques. ScienceCity offers a series of entertaining, inspiring and educational science programs for preschool and school-age children. The grant will support the group’s objective to foster a love of science exploration and a love of learning with younger students. The free programs include creative, hands-on science experiences for local children. This grant will cover the expenses associated with installing wireless infrastructure at Safford High School. As part of a project called BYOD Learning Environment (Bring Your Own Device), educators will be able to use online resources more freely and creatively in their classrooms. This new learning environment engages students by allowing them access to a site-wide network on their digital devices. “Freeport-McMoRan is committed to working with communities to identify effective partnerships that will bring lasting benefits to the people of Graham County,” said Tracy Bame, president of the Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Foundation.Graham County Arizona - News
