Barbara Gray, 75, a real estate agent in Charleston, was 20-year-old Bobbi Owens back then. Her encounter with Elvis started as a dare from her girlfriends at The Carriage House, a bar in downtown Charleston, on June 28, 1956.

“I just dialed the Francis Marion Hotel and asked for Elvis Presley’s room,”
she said Wednesday from her James Island home.

Presley played Charleston that night, but Gray didn’t see the show. In the morning, she was picked up by Elvis’ white Cadillac convertible. She stowed her foot locker in the trunk while he flew on ahead.
After all, she planned to go to Philadelphia to see her boyfriend, and this was a free ride. Her aunt lived in Richmond, so she had a place to stay.
“It was a lark, just something fun to do,” she said. “I still didn’t know what Elvis looked like.”
She was a divorced young mother, she said, and during that time of her life she was “looking for love in all the wrong places, and in all the wrong ways.”
Meeting The King
On June 30 she met Elvis at the Jefferson Hotel lunch counter in Richmond.
When he turned around to face her she said, “Oh my god, he’s beautiful.”
He was playful and funny. She remembers one of their interchanges.
“You want a beer?” he said.
“No,” she told him.
“Good, I don’t like my women to drink beer,” he told her.
