Review: In Muni's 'Oz,' the composer is king
The Muni's final production of the season, "The Wizard of Oz," could best be described as a live "composer's cut" version of the classic film.
Similar to "director's cut" versions of popular movies in which scenes deleted prior to release are restored, this version of "Oz," originally created for the Royal Shakespeare Company, includes the complete original music and lyrics created for the 1939 movie by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg.
Although the script follows the movie screenplay scene for scene, fans of the movie will notice some differences. Introductory stanzas have been restored to "Over the Rainbow," "If I Only Had a Brain," "If I Only Had a Heart," and "If I Only Had the Nerve," and an entirely new musical number, "Jitterbug" has been restored in Act II.
However, the heart (and brain and courage) of one of the most beloved movies in cinema history remains intact in this production, directed for The Muni by Matthew Vala.
The central characters in "Oz" — Dorothy (Kara DeWall), the Scarecrow (Joshua Ratz), the Tin Man (Greg Donathan) and the Cowardly Lion (Gus Gordon) — closely parallel their movie counterparts in acting and singing style. Gordon flawlessly duplicates all of Bert Lahr's vocal flourishes in "King of the Forest," and DeWall movingly performs "Over the Rainbow" twice — the second time while trapped in the Witch's castle.
Two characters that diverge most noticeably from the movie versions are the Wicked Witch of the West/Miss Gulch (Megan Dowding), and the Wizard/Professor Marvel (Johnny Molson).
Dowding's Witch, clad in a frilly and sequin-studded black and purple gown, is both more glamorous and at times more chilling than Margaret Hamilton's over-the-top cackling crone. Meanwhile, Molson endows Professor Marvel and the Wizard with more of a huckster or carnival barker character than the mild-mannered Frank Morgan did in the movie.
Other notable dual roles include Johna Keen as Aunt Em and Glinda the Good Witch, and Richard Beans as Uncle Henry and the guard at the Wizard's Emerald City castle.
Like the movie, the stage "Oz" portrays Dorothy's Kansas home in bleak, muted earth tones and Oz in bright colors. In the tornado sequence, stage fog effects, loud noises and flashing lights give the scene a darker, more disorienting feel than in the film. This scene also includes a masterfully executed mid-air transformation of Miss Gulch into the Witch.
The scenes inside the Wizard's throne room replaced the floating head seen in the movie with a very abstract, elongated figure that (to me) more closely resembled a simian than a human face. These scenes and others also included some spectacular pyrotechnics. At one point in Friday night's show, a stagehand had to quickly extinguish some lingering flames.

The latest in the Superman franchise was a disappointment to most; in trying to focus on some kind of inner conflict for Superman, Bryan Singer actually seemed to neglect a more action orientated crowd. The masses would rather a physically damaged Superman than an emotional one. I’m of the opinion though that if the film were cut down in to a tighter running time, minus the kid stuff, then it would have actually been a pretty decent movie. The plane rescue, still remains one of my favorite action scenes that I have seen in a cinema. There were rumblings that Singer left some scenes on the cutting room floor to save for another film, but alas he is not to return to the franchise as Zach Snyder stepped in. With the Anthology being released on Blu-Ray again, they have now added the deleted scene to the extras; though the true cause for it being left out of the original cut was that Singer did not think it had the weighed he hoped it would pull.
It’s a shame though, perhaps establishing a better identity of Krypton and the alienation of Superman would’ve added something more.
