No need to sulk about it: The old rules still apply

ITHOUGHT this column was going to be about baseball.

After all, I've been to four games this season, from the bucolic pleasures of minor league ball in Frederick, Md., and Richmond to the big-league venues of the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees. But the experience at Yankee Stadium left much to be desired.

My husband and I were in the Big Apple on vacation with good friends John and Charlotte, and, as is our usual experience, enjoyed the open friendliness of the vast majority of New Yorkers. Information, instructions, service, and chitchat with the locals are all available to anyone even remotely capable of making eye contact or conversation with strangers.

Our trip from Midtown to the Bronx via subway was a delight. We all found seats in a spotless car that was heavily air-conditioned and featured fans of all ages--including a visitor from Bogotá, Colombia, who said his trip to the U.S. was a "dream come true," and 65-year-old twins wearing identical shorts-and-blouse ensembles. Conversation was friendly, baseball-savvy, and amusing.

The new stadium featured employees holding signs asking patrons: "Do you need help?" And the men seated in front of us in right field were happy to exchange high-fives at the appropriate moments with the strangers from Virginia.

BLEACHER BUMS

But the three young testosterone-infused Yankees fans behind us? Terrible. As Charlotte said later, "They had a vocabulary of 10 words." At least half of those 10 were profane.

Now, I'm no prude: I've used some of those words myself. But as the game progressed, the four of us became increasingly uncomfortable. They even dissed the home team: "Posada sucks!" one of these vulgarians shouted--just seconds before the catcher hit a home run--in what proved a minor outburst. Later, one guy asked his "friend"--to silent resentment--"Remember that time when I hit you in the face?"

"No need to sulk about it," the questioner helpfully added.
