Republicans Map Out Plan Of Their Own
Republicans, who recently filed a lawsuit in federal court to challenge the new Illinois Congressional district map made by Democrats in Springfield, released their own alternative map last week.
The alternative map was submitted as part of the Republican's case to Federal Judge Joan Lefkow.
Republicans claimed the Democrats map, adopted by the Illinois General Assembly and signed by Gov. Pat Quinn, was far too spread out with districts in crescent or "ear muff" shapes designed to pit Republican against Republican and to maximize Democratic strongholds. The Republican map is much more compact geographically though Democrats say other factors such as serving "communities of interest" were also factored in to making their map.
The Republican map would put most of the Journal & Topics Newspapers area squarely in Democratic U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky's 9th District that would run east to Lake Michigan, west along the Cook and Lake counties border from the Edens Expressway to west of Rt. 53 in Arlington Hts. and Rolling Meadows. Its proposed boundaries proceed along Touhy Avenue through Lincolnwood, Niles and Park Ridge to I-294 where it moves north slightly along the Des Plaines-Rosemont border moving north of Elk Grove Village to include Mt. Prospect, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling and Arlington Hts.
Schakowsky would lose all but a sliver of the City of Chicago.
The alternative 6th District currently represented by Republican House Minority Whip U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam would incorporate most of Elk Grove Village running west along Rt. 58 past Bartlett and south to Warrenville.
The Democrats' map would create a 6th District that wrapped around the new 8th District flowing through five counties.
The alternative 3d District would incorporate all of Rosemont and a small slice of Elk Grove Village east of Rt. 83 and a small part of Des Plaines south of Oakton Street and east of Rt. 83. The 3d would also run east into Chicago taking the place of much of the heavily Hispanic 4th District's north side.
U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh's (R-8th) new district would dip down into parts of Palatine and Arlington Hts. before moving west into Kane and McHenry counties.
U.S. Rep. Robert Dold's 10th District would be pushed north giving up many of its current Democratic strongholds with a southern border along the Cook and Lake counties boundary line only taking in a small part of Cook County along Lake Michigan in Glencoe and part of Winnetka and a northern boarder along the Illinois Wisconsin line stretching west to the Lake and McHenry counties border.
