Bill Maloney Speaks at W.Va. Bar Association's 125th Anniversary

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS  --  The West Virginia Bar Association hosted a special interview with Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Maloney during the association’s 125th anniversary Saturday at The Greenbrier.

During the hour-long question and answer session with Joyce McConnell, from the West Virginia University College of Law, Maloney hit several key campaign issues such as reformation of the tax structure, judicial system, and the economy.

Maloney opened by telling members of the association about his background in business.

“In West Virginia business, we see people who have to move out of state,” he said. “You really start to see how hard it is. We need to have leadership in Charleston.”

Noting the recent out-of-state move of West Virginia’s only Fortune 500 company, Maloney says that one way to keep jobs and businesses in the state is to reform the tax structure.

“The tax system seems archaic,” he said. “We tax your tractor, your dog— the infrastructure is huge. Teamwork is a huge thing so we need to get everyone involved in the infrastructure problem.

Another major facet of the state’s economy deals with the wealth of natural resources. Maloney mentioned that several Texas businesses are ready to invest in Marcellus drilling but there are certain regulations needed beforehand.

“”They want to know that cities are not going to sue them and ban them from drilling,” he said. “They want to know that there’s not some crazy ordinance where their rights are taken away. They want to know what the rules are.”

Yet, environmental issues play a huge part in the development of such regulations. Concentrating on development of Marcellus in particular, Maloney says there is no causal relationship between fracking and groundwater contamination. He also noted that several companies are releasing the list of chemicals that are used.

“There is a huge opportunity to develop mining, natural gas and timber,” he said. “I read about a new steel mill making tubing for Marcellus wells being built in Ohio, which should be going in Weirton.”

Yet, with a looming inventory tax, Maloney posed the question, “why would you be in West Virginia?”

“The inventory tax needs to go,” he said. “There’s also B&O taxes, which we used to have statewide but now cities have them. You have personal property taxes. I talked about taxing your dog and tractor.
