&Nbsp;and eventually his son Bill Hinger in the late 1970's and 1980's. This drum is labeled (by hand!) #265 on a paper tag inside the shell (see photo #4). Hinger obtained a patent for the "Sectionalized Musical Drum" on November 17, 1981 and all drums manufactured before then have a red stamp on the inside of the shell that says "Patent Applied for" while drums like this have a red stamp that reads "US Pat 4,300,437" indicating that they were built after 1981. The unique snare drum separates in the middle via a mechanism that allows the performer to adjust the amount of space between the two halves of the shell. This space allows air to escape for maximum projection that can cut through thick orchestration like that of Shostakovich's 10th Symphony. The shell, like most of Hinger's snare drums, is made out of a synthetic resin material instead of wood which adds to the cutting character of this instrument's unique timbre.
