New chef brings changing tide to Boat House

Chef Jonathan Cambra has big plans for the Boat House Restaurant in Tiverton. More than the other properties of the Newport Restaurant Group, the Boat House hasn’t had the cachet that some of its sister properties do. 22 Bowens has impressive steaks and a rich, dark wood atmosphere. The Mooring has creative seafood and an elegant dockside. The Smokehouse has barbecue and amazing aromas that waft through the sea air. Castle Hill has it all, including the perfect setting where the lawn, dotted with Adirondack chairs, rolls down to sea.

Make no mistake, the Boat House has attracted plenty of satisfied diners for a casual lunch or dinner since it opened six years ago.

With a great location on the Sakonnet River, it has the water view vibe going strong. With tons of windows inside and plenty of tables outside, every seat comes with a view. The location, within the gates of the Villages on Mount Hope Bay condominium complex, guarantees the restaurant an additional audience, especially in the summer.

But still there’s never been a must-have dish, though I always feel like this is the place you start a meal with fresh Rhode Island-grown oysters. In fact, with a menu offering everything from burgers to swordfish to beet risotto, there’s no theme here.

But Cambra, the new executive chef, has a plan to change all that. He’ll bring in his style, honed as executive chef for six years at Castle Hill, where he helped significantly expand the farm-to-table menu, and started a garden for kitchen use.

For now, it will start with simple, well-crafted, well-prepared meals made with as many local ingredients as possible.

Cambra’s home in Bristol has brought him close to many farms and farmers who will help stock the kitchen with local tomatoes, potatoes, greens and even garlic. Because he is a weekend fisherman, a native Rhode Islander and of Portuguese descent, look for some specialties from his own kitchen and heritage to appear on the Boat House menu. Think fresh littlenecks, homemade stuffies, elegant versions of linguine and clams or chicken and peas and dishes made with locally raised pork. Imagine the combination of homestyle favorites crafted with a chef’s expertise and the most seasonal and local of ingredients.

That may be what people think of when they think about the Boat House in the near future. His new menu will debut in the fall.

Cambra, 36, also has big plans for spending some time with the family.
