'Goals for Gazzara' soccer tournament being held today
Twelve teams from Atlantic and Cumberland counties will participate in the inaugural "Goals for Gazzara" Soccer Tournament today at the Joseph E. Romano Youth Sports Complex in Vineland.
Games start at 8 a.m. with the boys semifinals at 2 p.m. and the championship game at 3:20 p.m. The girls championship will be at 2:40 pm. There will be an auction and speeches at 1:45 pm and the awards ceremony at 4 p.m.
In between games, participants and spectators can participate in safe-driving demonstrations, such as drinking-and-driving simulators and fatal-vision goggles and golf carts. They also can watch the "Matt Maher Video Documentary," pledge to buckle up for Nick and pledge not to text and drive. Safe-driving demonstrations are being sponsored by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance.
The event is in memory of Nick Gazzara Jr., an 18-year-old senior at Sacred Heart High School and accomplished soccer player. Nick's life was tragically cut short on Dec. 16, 2010, when he was killed in a motor vehicle accident. He lost control of his car and slid into oncoming traffic on a snow-covered road. Nick was not wearing his seat belt and died at the scene.
All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Nick Gazzara Memorial Soccer Fund and be distributed to benefit youth soccer here in our community.
