Burrell looks forward with new wrestling coach - Pittsburgh Tribune ...
-->
Dr. Bernard "Bud" Sines, a retired prison dentist who guided a successful high school team in Wisconsin for nearly a decade, was named wrestling coach at five-time defending WPIAL Class AA champion Burrell on Tuesday night.
The Burrell School Board approved Sines, 56, of Murrysville, by an 8-0 vote and gave him a one-year contract for $4,397.
Sines takes over a program that's one of the more successful in the state but was overshadowed by controversy last season.
"I've had people try to tell me what happened last year, and I told them respectfully that I'm not interested," Sines said. "I'm looking ahead. This is the right time and right place for me."
Sines replaces Ryan Yates, who coached Burrell the past two seasons before resigning in March. Early this past season, a wrestler accused Yates of injuring him in practice. Lower Burrell police investigated, and no charges were filed. Yates coached the Bucs through the end of the season.
Burrell has captured seven WPIAL Class AA titles (1997, 2004, 2007-11) and one PIAA crown (2008). Their five consecutive WPIAL championships is a league record. Burrell also has produced five individual state AA championships.
"In truth, there's no pressure at all," Sines said. "If you teach the kids everything you know, and they have the talent and background, they'll do fine. Right now, I still have to figure out if I'll have a full lineup. I've got to check on that. I'm looking forward to having open gyms and meeting the kids."
Burrell appears to be in rebuilding mode. Six of the nine wrestlers who advanced to the Class AA Southwest Regional — the tournament after the WPIAL finals and before the state finals — graduated and committed to compete in college.
Sines believes he's a good fit at Burrell.
"A lot of what they teach is right out of my playbook," Sines said. "I don't want to reinvent the wheel. They have an aggressive style of wrestling, and I want to keep promoting that."
Sines grew up in St. Louis, Mo., and was a walk-on wrestler at the University of Iowa. He later served as an assistant coach at a high school near Nashville, Tenn. During Sines' nine seasons as head coach at Brookfield East High School, Wis., his team won seven consecutive conference titles and produced 33 state qualifiers, 14 state medalists, and one state champion.
Sines moved to the Pittsburgh area when his wife, Barbara, took a job here.
