NHTSA Investigates 4400 Lotus Elises for Oil-Cooler Leaks
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating oil-cooler leaks on 4,400 Lotus Elise sports cars from the 2005-6 model years after receiving complaints from owners saying that a tire became coated with oil, causing handling problems.
In a document filed Friday on its Web site, the safety agency said it received 17 complaints from owners who reported that an oil-cooler line ruptured and sprayed oil on the wheel assemblies and or within the engine bay.
“Consumers allege the condition can create a loss of vehicle control and one complaint alleges the vehicle caught fire,” according to the document.
“The oil line released from its fitting on the front right oil cooler, wetting the tire with oil,” one owner reported. “The car spun and left the road. No damage occurred.”
The agency was not aware of any injuries or fires related to the condition.
In other recent actions:
• Ford is recalling about 20,000 of its 2011 Ranger pickups because a switch controlling features including the turn signals and brake lights may fail.
Ford traced the problem to a multifunction switch controlling turn signals, the hazard warning signal, tail lamps and brake lights, it told the agency. The automaker added that the center high-mounted stop lamp continued to work even when the other brake lights failed.
In addition to the Rangers, Ford is recalling about 6,300 of those switches sent to dealers for use on 2004-11 Rangers, 2002–5 Excursion S.U.V.’s and 2002–7 F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 pickup trucks.
Ford said it became aware of the problem because of warranty complaints and that it was not aware of any accidents.
• Ford is recalling about 2,900 of its 2007 Five Hundred and Mercury Montego sedans because the fuel tanks “may not have consistent welds between the fuel tank and fuel filler neck.”
The automaker said it first investigated two consumer complaints of a fuel leak and two complaints of an illuminated warning light for the evaporative emissions system in 2009. It concluded, however, that the problem did not “represent an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety” in part because consumers would quickly become aware of either a smell or the warning light, and few vehicles had the problem.
The automaker told the agency it continued to monitor the situation and inspect additional fuel tanks. Ford said it believed most of the problems were corrected under warranty repairs, but recently decided “in an abundance of caution” to recall the 2,900 vehicles.

Understanding Car Warranty Law Basics For Autos
At first when you examine the car warranty law you might feel a little overwhelmed. Nonetheless, there are some basics that apply from state to state in the United States in regards to the regulations for car warranty law.
Emission Controls Car Warranty Law
Emission controls are the parts of your car that control how much carbon emission is put out by your auto when you drive it. The majority of these emissions come from the exhaust pipe of your vehicle. Depending on how well your car is running and the condition of the emission control equipment will determine how much carbon emission you’re producing per use.
This is often very important piece of this theme. On new cars, the car manufacture warranty is required by federal regulations for every state to repair or replace the emission control components of a car. This ensures that this part of the vehicle is always operating properly. In California, the car manufacturer is also required to cover the smog controls for the car and provide a smog control certification for each new vehicle.

Can I buy mechanical breakdown insurance if my car is paid in full and about four years old? I’m getting sick of shelling out 200+ bucks everytime something goes wrong. I want to buy this sort of insurance in addition to my regular insurance so I can get away with paying a deductible at the time of repair. But can't find companies that offer this as a separate product. Any help much appreciated
Are extended auto warranties legit? I’ve a 2003 Chevy Trialblazer with about 82,000 miles, my original warranty expired in 2008. I’ve heard about extended car warranties provided by different companies. I’m thinking about getting a warranty for my car, can anyone advice which companies are good or are this companies just fool of it. Thanks
Yeah they can be legitimate. But you have to know how to read the fine print. I'd get a copy of the contract they want you to sign and take it to a friend or family member who’s very knowledgeable about car insurance BEFORE you sign it. There may be a great deal of fine print or certain exclusions that make it very difficult for you to get money from a claim.
Some what, they’re ligit if you go by there rules which means no tampering with you car, having it serviced exactly when needed and only having a certified (by them) shop do the work. And when your car breaks they inspect to find a flaw and not have to honor there warranties. I bought one for a used car on the dealership and got it voided because i installed my own stereo system and changed my own oil/filter.
