WILLIAMS, Ariz. (AP) - A lightning-caused wildfire burning near the northern Arizona community of Williams is now at more than 3,700 acres.
The U.S. Forest Service said Saturday that smoke is visible from Flagstaff and along portions of I-40 due to operations on and around Government Mountain from the 3,781-acre Beale Fire.
The fire is being managed and crews are working along Forest Road 793 to secure the southern boundary of the fire management area.
There are no closures on the Beale Fire, but forest visitors are advised to avoid camping in or near the fire scene.
Meanwhile, the lightning-caused Parallel Fire nine miles east of Tusayan is at 4,346 acres and also being managed for resource objectives. That fire started on July 4 and is being allowed to burn itself out.

We haven't seen any large fires," said Daniel Berlant of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire. Wildfires, often a staple of California summers, can put heavy concentrations of particulates into the air.

During the first couple weeks of August, I had the opportunity to go to northern California as part of a multi agency type 2 firefighting crew. A crew is made of 20 people with a crew boss, assistant crew boss, and 3 squad bosses. My crew flew from Knoxville, TN to Redding, CA in the last week of July and rode by bus to Covelo, CA near the Mendocino National Forest. At that time, the Hunter Fire as it was called was only 200 acres in size. Throughtout the entire 2 week assignment, the crew's basic duties were fuel reduction along control lines and mopup. This involved cutting brush one chain length(60 feet) in and moving it from the black(fire) side to the green side. Crews working at night would come through and then create a backfire to fight fire with fire. After they did this, our crew would go back through looking for hot spots that may cause trouble. We repeated this process for miles as the fire continued to grow and jump direct attack lines.
