Travelers to Cleveland feel bite of taxes

The post is based on a new report, “Travel Taxes in the U.S.: The Best and Worst Cities to Visit,” which “found that taxes targeting travelers impose an average cost of 56% more than general sales taxes,” according to Forbes.com. Taxes on travel-related services, called discriminatory travel taxes, are for things such as staying at hotels, renting cars, and eating in restaurants. “The discriminatory sales tax is above and beyond the general sales tax and is borne largely by travelers,” says Joe Bates, director of research for the Global Business Travel Association Foundation , which released the 2011 annual report last week.

Forbes.com notes that the top 50 U.S. markets are ranked two ways: by overall travel tax burden (general sales tax and travel-related taxes combined), and by travel-related taxes only. The report includes separate data for central city and airport locations, as the tax structures are often distinct.

Cleveland was No. 7 on the list of U.S. destinations where travelers incur the highest total taxes in central city locations. Chicago had the highest taxes, followed, in order, by New York, Seattle, Boston, Kansas City, Mo., and Minneapolis.

The lowest taxes for travelers are concentrated heavily in Florida, with the top three spots going to Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and West Palm Beach.

Bloomberg runs a long, colorful profile of Gary Cohn, the Cleveland native who's thought to be in the best position to become CEO of troubled Goldman Sachs Group Inc. should Lloyd Blankfein step down from the giant securities firm.

Michael Ovitz, the former Hollywood agent and a Goldman Sachs investor, tells Bloomberg that any company director who doesn't want Mr. Cohn, 50, to succeed the 56-year-old Mr. Blankfein should have his “head examined.” He describes Mr. Cohn as a pure trader: “He has that whole feel in his body and brain and fingertips.”

The piece notes that Goldman Sachs shares have fallen 19% this year and 8% since Mr. Blankfein became CEO five years ago. But Bloomberg says it's far from clear that Mr. Cohn, the No. 2 executive at Goldman Sachs, would be the likely replacement.

His biggest handicap: “an abrasive style, an appetite for risk and a long association with Blankfein, who also started at the company in metals.

The Internet has changed the way we live in the 21st century. Communicating with friends and family is now easier. E-commerce has simplified shopping and it is now easier to find information and news.

However, the Internet has also made it easier for law enforcement authorities to investigate crimes and obtain incriminating evidence. Facebook pictures and posts now routinely find their way into criminal prosecutions, and Craigslist, the Internet classified ads website, has been characterized as a one-stop-shopping destination for police who are looking for suspects. Recently, a Craigslist post led to Florida theft charges for a 21-year-old North Fort Myers man.

Last Friday, a Cape Coral man reported a burglary. After leaving his garage door open, he awoke to find that his car stereo had been taken out of his car. In addition, some tools were missing.

The Cape Coral man decided to go onto Craigslist to see if he could find a listing for his stereo. He found a listing for a stereo identical to his missing stereo and he informed the police. A police detective then contacted the person who posted the ad and arranged a meeting on Saturday to purchase the stereo.

Police later encountered a 21-year-old man who they believe posted the ad on Craigslist and arrested him for allegedly trying to sell the stolen stereo. The 21-year-old North Fort Myers man is now facing a long list of theft-related charges, including burglary, grand theft, dealing in stolen property, and using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony.
