LightSquared comes out fighting over GPS interference claims
The GSP interference saga (see - The plan that fell to earth? LightSquared skewered by GPS interference ) took a new twist this week with LightSquared claiming that the reason its mobile broadband network 'might' interfere with GPS systems is because the manufacturers have failed to meet the US Department of Defense and international standards. If they had, interference wouldn't be a problem (not that there is any). LightSquared's version of the story is that the Department of Defense set aside a 4MHz guard band around the GPS spectrum so that the applications that would (evenutally) occupy the spectrum around it couldn't interfere with the GPS application (and vice versa). However, alleges LightSquared, the GPS vendors are now asserting the right to a whacking 34MHz guard band to ensure non-interference, basically because they got complacent and designed their terminal equipment in such a way that it was open to interference in the adjacent bands.
