'Perfect Morning' Includes Frog Hunting In The Amazon

It was a beautifully clear August morning. The green grass was wet from last night’s hard rain but the sky was a bright blue. You could feel a hint of autumn in the air as it was warm in the sun but cool in the shade.

My 10-year-old son Sergio and I were preparing for a canoe trip across the lake to a place we call the Amazon, an isolated pond choked with lily pads and big bullfrogs, a young boy’s paradise. 

Sergio grabbed his net and white bucket, along with his magic frog rod and we loaded everything into our canoe.

We paddled across the still, black surface and the smile on my boy's face reminded me of how lucky I was to be with him on this fine morning.

After our canoe hit the sandy beach, we needed to carry it through the woods a bit to reach our destination. We immediately heard the croaking of the bullfrogs as we pushed across the land and finally into the thick swamp.

Bullfrogs have always intrigued me, especially the big ones. The way they hang motionless with their long legs dangling in the dark water and their big black and gold eyes staring off into the horizon waiting for some unlucky invertebrate to invade their field of vision.

It knew it wouldn't be long before my son spotted the eyes of the monster. "There he is dad, and he is huge!"

The magic frog rod is an old fishing pole with eight feet of fishing line tied to the end. A plastic worm is then tied on using a knot called the Duncan’s loop. There is no hook involved so in the end, the frog escapes unharmed. 

We paddled up as close as possible to the big green swamp machine, and I slowly and quietly dangled the 4-inch worm in front of his lifeless eyes until the big bull opened his mouth wide and leaped across the pads to inhale the worm. Experience has taught me that he will not hold on to that fake worm forever, so I quickly pulled him toward us and Sergio put the net to him and brought him into the canoe.

I grabbed him by his thin waist and held him up against the blue sky. He had a big dark green head with a deep yellow throat and a white underbelly with brown camo markings on his legs. He was the perfect bullfrog.  

We put him in our big white bucket for a while until it was time to leave. We found a couple more but none as big as bull. Before we left we opened the lid and watched him quickly swim away towards freedom, pushing against the water with his strong legs and webbed feet.
