Colts' rookie OTs Castonzo, Ijalana ready for 1st tests
Worth watching Three areas to watch during the Colts' preseason opener tonight against the Rams:
» Under center: Don't get bent out of shape with the statistics mustered by QBs Curtis Painter, Dan Orlovsky and Nate Davis. What's important is how they run the offense and deal with defenses they haven't been facing in training camp. The challenge: Act like you belong.
» Any returns? With teams kicking off from the 35-yard line, there might not be many opportunities for Devin Moore, rookie Chad Spann and others to show what they've got. That shouldn't be an issue on punts. Rookies David Gilreath and Joe Lefeged could have a chance to make an impression. Someone needs to.
» Now, Jerry: Few players will be under more scrutiny than 2010 first-round draft pick Jerry Hughes. He had a quiet rookie season. He is one of several veterans who might see extended playing time in the preseason. The coaching staff has to determine whether Hughes can be a factor this year.

ANDERSON, Ind. -- By Anthony Castonzo's standards, he probably isn't ready to run with the bulls in Pamplona or handle the Boston Marathon.
The Indianapolis Colts' first-round draft pick simply hopes his training-camp progression has him ready for tonight's preseason opener against the St. Louis Rams.
Expected to be the long-term answer at left tackle -- that's the guy whose primary responsibility is to keep the opposing team's best pass rusher off quarterback Peyton Manning's blind side -- Castonzo has spent the first two weeks of camp working with the second unit.
He insists he's making the necessary progress, however. Gradually.
"I've been talking with (assistant offensive line coach) Ron Prince a lot about it," Castonzo said, "and he keeps on telling me it's 'crawl, walk, run.'
"I'm in my second week of camp, so I'm not going to be running, yet."
What's important to the Colts is whether Castonzo and No. 2 pick Ben Ijalana are in full stride, or close to it, for the Sept. 11 regular-season opener at Houston. Ideally, Castonzo will have developed enough to supplant Jeff Linkenbach as the starting left tackle. Ijalana is viewed as Ryan Diem's eventual replacement at right tackle.
If each lives up to expectations, the Colts will have their bookend tackles for the foreseeable future.
