Electronic business in Bethalto focused on service

BETHALTO - Christina Johnson always buys the latest video game craze, not just for fun but to keep up.

Johnson, who owns Computer Specialists in Bethalto, said her store offers services to repair a wide range of electronics, from computers to gaming systems and televisions. And in the ever-changing world of technology, Johnson knows she needs to keep up to stay relevant.

"You kind of have to play with it and test it out," Johnson said. "You just have to be on the Internet constantly to keep up. So much comes out so fast."

Johnson has operated her business out of Bethalto for the past six years and has continued to increase the scope of what she can repair. She only works on PC's but is certified by Hewlett-Packard and Dell Computers. Her husband, Matt, helps run the store - both majored in computer science.

As a child, Johnson wanted to make computers her career. Keeping up with technology, such as Microsoft's Kinect or the upcoming Wii U, maintains her interest.

"I've always liked computers as a kid; it changes so much," Johnson said. "I like the challenge."

Of course, running your own business can be huge challenge, but Johnson said she is OK with putting in the work to see the end result.

"A lot of work and a lot of hours," Johnson said. "You sometimes get some headaches, but it's worth it."

Johnson said Computer Specialists not only does repairs, they offer advice on what kind of computers to buy or will take in older electronics to recycle. She said unlike stores that try to sell unnecessary additions with computers, she wants to help customers get what they need.

"We custom-build computers, work on laptops," Johnson said. "We can give advice on what exactly to buy, and can recommend what's good and what's not."

Johnson said she works with someone during and after the process of buying a computer and said the service level at Computer Specialists is unmatched by big retailers like Best Buy.

"Some people don't know how to set up their computer at home. I've done service calls at eight, nine, 10 o'clock at night," Johnson said.

Johnson has run promotions depending on the month, such as running a sale in June to help raise awareness for cancer, an issue close to heart because her own mother died from the disease.

Having a personal touch for her customers extends all the way to Johnson giving her personal cell phone away to those who have a computer problem at an inopportune time.
