Values Voters Bus Tour fires up Sioux City conservatives

SIOUX CITY - The Family Research Council's Values Voters Bus Tour brought pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-family, conservative Republican activists -- including presidential candidate Congressman Thaddeus McCotter, R-Mich. -- to the Floyd Monument in Sioux City on Thursday morning. It was the 14th stop on a four-day, 21-stop tour leading up to Saturday's Iowa Straw Poll in Ames.

McCotter told the crowd, a mix of several dozen party faithful and undecided voters, that people like to pretend there is a divide between social and economic conservatives.

"But we understand we can only have a prosperous economy if we have a virtuous citizenry," he said.

He called for a return to the principles of former presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan that favored self-government and liberty, adding that it is wrong to "prop up the (current) welfare manner of government." He called for strengthening the economy through tax relief, regulatory relief and policy changes.

Congressman Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, told the audience that he was proud of Iowa's vote last year not to retain of three State Supreme Court justices who participated in the unanimous "evidence based" decision finding same-sex marriage constitutional.

"You don't have to go to law school to understand they missed some really obvious `evidence,'" he said, garnering laughter and applause.

Connie Mackey, Faith Family Freedom Fund chairman, also drew applause when she told the crowd that her organization had campaigned in Iowa against retaining the judges, too.

"We put the pictures of three judges who were legislating from the bench on a bus and you got rid of them," she said. "Thank you."

The Rev. Cary Gordon, associate pastor of Cornerstone World Outreach, was present and got a shout-out from former Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave, now with the pro-life leadership Susan B. Anthony List.

"Cornerstone has the reputation of turning out more people for the straw poll than any other church," she said. She called for a pro-life president and the repeal of the Obama health care plan.

The bus rolled onto the lawn at the Floyd Monument more than half-an-hour past its scheduled time of 10:45 a.m. Passengers apologized for their tardiness, blaming it on Le Mars, Iowa, Mayor Dick Kirkhoff, whom they said had insisted they go from their stop there at Bob's Drive-In to the downtown Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor for some locally made ice cream.
