Mandarin Couple Robbed At ATM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Mandarin couple say they were robbed at gunpoint while driving up to an ATM in a seemingly safe neighborhood on Monday night.

Jacksonville police haven't made any arrests yet, and police say there was at least one other similar armed robbery that night.

They couple say it was just downright frightening when they were confronted by two armed robbers at a VyStar Credit Union ATM off Old St. Augustine Road.

They say one had a shotgun and the other a handgun.

"It was very scary," said Linda, who did not want to give her last name.

Linda said she had never been through anything as scary or dangerous in her life. She said that late Monday night, she and her husband drove up to the ATM to deposit a check.

"One came up behind the ATM. The other came up behind our car and stuck the guns in our faces and told us to give them all of our money," Linda said.

That's when she made a potentially life or death choice, she said.

"They said they were going to shoot us, and that's about the time when we looked at each other and we jumped in the car and took off," Linda said. "I just kind of slid in and put my foot on the gas and took off."

Linda said she and her husband left the crooks behind without anything except a pack of cigarettes off the dash.

She said Linda and her husband then followed the crooks in their getaway car, enough to give police a description.

She said they were two men in their 20s and were wearing all black and covered their faces with purple bandanas. One had blond hair and blue eyes, and they both sped off in a gray Ford Expedition with duct tape over the license plate.

Channel 4 crime and safety analyst Ken Jefferson said the couple took a risk, and this time it paid off.

"I would recommend if you can get away, get out of there. Do it," Jefferson said. "If the person has a gun and they want to shoot you, let them shoot at a moving car instead of a sitting duck."

Jefferson said that for the most part, though, going to an ATM after dark isn't a good idea.

"Sometimes you can be ambushed," he said. "Sometimes there are situations and circumstances that can't be prevented. What can be prevented is going out to an ATM late at night."

Linda, a mother of three who's thankful to be alive, said she learned her lesson and won't ever go to an ATM at night again.

"Not anywhere after dark," she said.

Hi Folks

I just saw the movie “Faster” and it’s not a bad movie at all. One of the things that caught my attention was one of the songs in the soundtrack, “Short Change Hero” by The Heavy. As I listened to this song I thought about all of the hero’s that I have met who were in places that there was no way they should have been. The guys in Detroit doing street ministry, the guy on the Toronto subway who was every bit the hero, (you know who you are), the sister that I know who lives and works in El Salvador.

Sometimes we are in the wrong place; sometimes we are in awfully dark places but maybe that the best time to be a hero.
