The 28-room property has made the most of those fertile roots and that dramatic vantage point for more than two decades.

Wood, stone and bamboo in their most natural, raw states lend texture and strength to spacious rooms that also have enormous windows for taking in the scenery (every guestroom has 180-degree waterfront views) — without losing a bit of their private, romantic atmosphere. Jetted tubs, fireplaces and a private deck off each room add to the sensual mood.

Rooms are all sage greens and natural wood — the focus is the view out those floor-to-ceiling windows.But the room that’s clearly the inn’s heart is the homey and stylish dining room, which has a massive double-hearth fireplace, wrought iron light fixtures and a heavy hint of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Matt Costello, chef and general manager of the Inn at Langley, is relaxed and enthusiastic as he talks about his passion for fresh, local, seasonal food to a group of diners assembled around the communal tables, which were made by a local woodworker.

Gourmet gospel hour over, chef Costello, who used to cook at the award-winning Dahlia Lounge and Palace Kitchen in nearby Seattle, gets down to business in his well-appointed but totally unpretentious and well-used open kitchen.

The result is simple, elegant food prepared and presented with confidence. From gnocchi with fresh squash blossom and summer truffle to sweet lettuce ravioli to marzipan-muscat sorbet and green almonds, the dishes surprise and delight.

Hearty meals framed by the rugged coastline are the basis of any stay at the Inn at Langley. But outside those 180-degree windows, the wild Pacific Northwest wilderness awaits.

What to do when you get there Spa on the Sound . Spa Essencia is located under the inn, right on the edge of Puget Sound, and offers a full complement of services. Be sure to ask for one of their three treatment rooms that have a view of the water. Mussel Bound . In nearby Coupeville lurks Toby’s Tavern , a charming hole-in-the-wall bar/restaurant that serves up simply divine Penn Cove mussels that are literally caught on the tavern’s doorstep. Shop Spots . Art galleries and antique stores outnumber all other types of retail in the charming blocks that make up “downtown” Langley, and they’re all within walking distance of the inn. A standout is the Star Store .
